The design of 882 Main Street centers around the

understanding that this site represents a gateway or

threshold between Central Square and Kendall / MIT.

The project allows for the repositioning of the property

as connection point along the sequence of squares

that make up the urban fabric of Cambridge that are

located along the red line. Lafayette square’s recent

re-development locally, combined with an increase in

urban activity in both Central and Kendall square, have

transformed this location (using Lynchian terms) from

an edge to a node. If properly developed, 882 Main

street can become a true landmark, transforming the

square once again into a gateway between Central

and Kendall Square.
